Open letter to all residents

I love everything about “going to the fireworks”.  I love the warm July nights.  I love being surrounded by friends, neighbors, family, and anyone else who  happens to be lucky enough  to  be in the vicinity of the Atlantic Highlands harbor that special evening.  I love watching the night sky sparkle as the blackness is painted with amazing colors and images, that last only seconds, yet remain in our memory banks forever.  I love the feeling in the pit of my stomach as the boom of the rockets vibrate through my whole body. I love the involuntary oohhs and aahhs of the crowd delighted by a particular display. And I love the sound of the boat horns giving their final seal of approval.

The tradition of celebrating the birth of America with a big bang has been a part of  The 4th of July experience for as long as any of us can remember.  I love this tradition and I am proud that my little 1.4 sq. mile town of Atlantic Highlands feels the same.  Many local fireworks are becoming yet another thing of the past.  With the downturn in the economy, fireworks seem to be on the cutting block of many other municipalities. Atlantic Highlands is stepping up to the plate to continue this summertime ritual.  But as we all know – nothing comes without a price.  This is why I am reaching out to all my fellow shore neighbors to PLEASE donate what you can to help keep this tradition alive.  This is a gift we can give to ourselves and each other.  A gift to celebrate the privilege of living in our own little paradise, living on the NJ shore and living in America.

Any donations can be made out to AHFD and are tax deductible.  But you must please, please, please put FIREWORKS under  memo, so that 100% goes to the display.  You may send checks to me …
