Dear Editor,

As a former Highlands resident and former scout I wanted to respond to Mr Zimmerman’s column regarding letting gay youth into the scouting program. The scouts taught me many things as a young man. Reverence for the outdoors and the environment, skills such as fire building and knot tying, respect for people from all walks of life, and the value of being part of a team are all things that I’ve carried forth into a successful and rewarding adult life. And as a proud and out gay man who was conscious of my sexual orientation even before becoming a BSA member I find Mr. Zimmerman’s rhetoric disturbing. I feel sorry for anyone in his sons troop who may be struggling with their own personal identity and is subject to his discriminatory and bigoted views. Mr Zimmerman, like so many others, will eventually find himself and his ideology on the wrong side of this thankfully evolving equal rights issue.
