The Ten Commandments were summarized by the Lord Jesus Christ in two: Love your God with all your heart, mind and soul and your neighbor as yourself. The Apostle John writes that the one who boasts of loving God without being concerned for his neighbor does not understand the Christian Faith. One of the best examples about who is our neighbor was the story of the Good Samaritan.
For the past two weeks we have seen an abundance of stories of how humanity has risen to help one another after the devastation that Hurricane Sandy has brought. Neighbors became concerned and helpful to their neighbors, relatives that were forgotten called, friends from nearby and afar call to find out how we were doing. For those who have lost their homes shelters were provided and an exorbitant abundance of food and clothing arrived. These supplies came from small bags brought by small children who went shopping to large trailers of food that came from the North, South East, West and Midwest.
Life for many thousands continues to be extremely difficult and in the hearts of the ones that have lost much and for the ones that have lost everything, there is deep pain and anguish. Even for those who have not lost anything, there is the gnawing feeling of guilt for not having lost anything. There is this sense of togetherness that has been thrown upon us as we have come through the storm.
Listening to the stories of people who have stood up to help makes one feel proud of the human race. Those that have stood up because they have understood that God wanted them to be involved with the needy and the hurting, those who are non-religious yet have a deep desire to help humanity – all came together because that is what good neighbors do.
Right now we are standing in the need gap providing a presence, presenting a helpful hand that brings food and clothing, and presenting our strength in removing the debris that is so pervasive. A time will come when we will be asked to start building so that we will continue to stand shoulder to shoulder and our neighborhoods will thrive.
