MIDDLETOWN, NJ – The Mayor and Township Committee recognized two dedicated volunteers at the April meeting for outstanding service to the community.

Girl Scout of the Jersey Shore 2012 Honoree Vita Kolber is recognized for her service by Mayor Anthony P. Fiore.

Vita Kolber, who devotes her time to a myriad of philanthropic endeavors, was recently honored by the Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore for her generous contributions to the Girl Scouts and for being a remarkable civic volunteer.  Mayor Anthony P. Fiore presented Kolber with a proclamation declaring March 30, 2012 as Vita Kolber Day in Middletown Township.  The date coincided with the Girl Scouts 100th anniversary gala where Kolber was honored for her service.

Kolber focuses her attention on health care, arts, and education. She is an ardent supporter of Riverview Medical Center; a K. Hovnanian Children’s Hospital Giving Committee Board Member; and a founding Board Member of the Women’s Philanthropic Committee. Vita volunteers to raise funds and coordinate the Meridian Affiliated Health Foundation Galas. She is a member of the NYC Actor’s Fund and a supporter of the Two River Times Theater. The Kolbers are also enthusiastic advocates of education, serving as benefactors to several college-bound students, and providing funds for scholarships to Monmouth University.

Sara Cruz, a Thorne Middle School student, was recognized by the Township Committee for organizing the collection of 2,300 pairs of jeans for Teens for Jeans program. The program provides jeans to homeless teenagers. Sara who read about the program in Redbook Magazine, started the drive in her middle school, then expanded it to schools throughout the district. She and fellow students sorted, folded and bundled all the donated jeans. Calvin Klein even donated 500 pairs to the cause!  Mayor Anthony P. Fiore presented Sara with a Certificate of Appreciation in recognition of her efforts.
