New York, NY – Richard Huff has been named Executive Director, Communications for CBS News.  The announcement was made today by Sonya McNair, Senior Vice President, Communications, CBS News.  His appointment is effective in May.  In this position, Huff will be responsible for strategic communications and brand development across multiple platforms for 48 HOURS MYSTERY, CBS SUNDAY MORNING, CBS News Productions and CBS News Primetime Specials. He will also contribute to the efforts of the department in support of all of CBS News. 

            “Richard is a journalist of exceptional caliber, with a broad and substantial range of experience,” said McNair. “He has an intuitive grasp of the role of communications within the news industry and will make an outstanding addition to the CBS News communications team.”

            Huff was most recently Deputy Features Editor, Television, at the New York Daily News.  In this capacity, he was responsible for a daily two-page section, a weekly TV listings guide and oversight for TV coverage in the paper. He was additionally responsible for planning, staffing, editing, writing and layout coordination. As a critic and editor, Huff reported breaking news and developed feature stories. He also interviewed celebrities, identified trends and maintained contact with executives and stars working in network and local television. He created a widely-read column on local television and was often called on by TV networks and radio stations to discuss television topics for a variety of audiences. Huff joined the New York Daily News in 1993 as a staff writer and was promoted to TV editor in 2001.

           Additionally, Huff has served since 1998 as an Adjunct Professor at the New School University in New York City, where he teaches a basic journalism class each semester online and in a classroom setting. He has created an Intermediate Journalism program for the University, which will be introduced in 2013.

           Before joining the New York Daily News, Huff served as a New York correspondent for Daily Variety, developing and reporting breaking news and feature stories in the television sector of the entertainment business for daily publication.  Prior to that, he was a staff reporter for The Hollywood Reporter, covering broadcast television, cable television, home video, music and other entertainment related issues for daily publication. Earlier, Huff served as Associate Editor for TWICE Magazine and Editor of The Mt. Pleasant/Pleasantville Post. He began his career in journalism at the Peekskill Evening Star. Huff is the author of more than 10 books, including The Jarretts, Reality Television, The Making of A Race Car, The Insider’s Guide to Stock Car Racing and Behind The Wall: A Season on the NASCAR Circuit. He has also written a number of articles for a variety of publications, including JEMS, USA Weekend, Do! Magazine, Old House Journal, Stock Car Racing, Circle Track and Inside NASCAR.

In addition to his work as a journalist, Huff serves as a volunteer emergency medical technician and has served three times as chief of the Atlantic Highlands First Aid & Safety Squad, Atlantic Highlands, N.J. He’s also been responsible for the squad’s public relations and marketing programs, grant writing and lectures at local and national EMS conventions on public relations and digital communications topics. He is also Director-At-Large, National Volunteer Fire Council, EMS/R Division, responsible for input on guiding the future of the newly created wing of the National Volunteer Fire Council.
