HOLMDEL, NJ – Recently, Holmdel Police Chief, John Mioduszewski, presented a plaque to Sara C. Weimer, Sara E. Weimer, and Joe Hawley of the Genevieve M. Hawley Memorial Foundation.  The plaque expressed the Department’s appreciation to the Hawley Foundation for its donation of a ballistic vest, which will be worn by “Diogi” one of the Holmdel Police canines.

The vest, which is ballistic and stab resistant, was manufactured by Point Blank Body Armor. They are produced at the cost of $940.00 each, and are specifically tailored to each Law Enforcement Patrol K-9.  The vests meet the identical ballistic protection levels as those produced for their human partners.  K-9 Diogi was measured and fitted as any police officer would be for their ballistic vest at Lanigan Associates, Inc. in Tinton Falls.  It will be used as a level of protection when the K-9 is deployed in high risk or volatile incidents.  Holmdel’s Police K-9’s are deployed regularly within the Township, and to assist in mutual-aid requested throughout Monmouth County

In recent years, there has been a national spike in assaults, and intentional killings of Law Enforcement Canines.  One of these killings was close to home in Gloucester Township, NJ where a K-9 named Schultz was killed while tracking a suspect after a robbery.

“This is an invaluable piece of equipment which could ultimately prevent unnecessary injury or death to a Law Enforcement K-9.  These dogs are not only our partners, but members of our family when they are off-duty,” said Officer Van Pelt.

In fact, Holmdel’s K-9 Diogi was named in honor of the K-9 Partner of Polk County, Florida Sheriff’s K-9 Deputy Matt Williams. Williams and his partner Diogi were ambushed, shot, and killed while tracking a suspect in 2006.
