RUMSON, NJ – Monmouth County Historical Association will be installing a loan exhibition with a maritime theme at the 2011 Two Rivers Antiques & Art Show. Paintings by the New York maritime artist James Bard will be shown, as well as other works. Bard, who worked during the mid-1800s, is known for his portraits of steamships. “The Thomas Hunt,” which will be displayed in the exhibition, was built for the Red Bank Steamboat Company and ran between Red Bank and New York City for many years.
Monmouth County waterways in the nineteenth-century were alive with steamboat travel and trade. Many visitors to the shore resorts arrived by steamboat and local farmers sent their produce to New York markets via steamboat. Keyport was home to the largest shipyard in the state, producing steamboats until it closed in 1881.
The Two Rivers Antiques & Art Show benefits the Monmouth Medical Center’s Jacqueline M. Wilentz Breast Center. It will be held at The Rumson Country Day School and will feature a select group of 25 nationally respected dealers.
