ASBURY PARK, NJ (August 8, 2011) – Mayor Ed Johnson once again will align star-studded entertainment with the spirit of the community at The 9th Annual Asbury Park Mayor’s Ball. Known as “The Event of the Year”, the Mayor’s Ball will kick-off on Saturday, September 10 at the Grand Arcade and will honor members of the community who go above and beyond to better the city of Asbury Park. This year’s honorees are: Georgies Bar, TAKA, and Pastor Guy Jean Florival of the Haitian Church of God.
To properly honor the community leaders of Asbury Park, The 9th Annual Asbury Park Mayor’s Ball will welcome Grammy-nominated and Tony award-winning artist Melba Moore, best known for her hits “Falling” and “Love’s Comin’ At Ya!”, for her second performance at the annual event. Moore’s return performance marks the third year the Mayor’s Ball will celebrate with celebrity entertainment. In 2010, Southside Johnny performed to a sold-out crowd of 500 guests.

The Kevin G. Sanders Community Service Award honors an individual or organization that has made a significant contribution to the betterment of the Asbury Park community. Georgies Bar will be honored as this year’s award recipient for its ongoing charitable work and community development. Annually, Georgies Bar works with multiple non-profit organizations to raise awareness of the needs of its community. Notable in 2010, the time-honored bar and grill donated nearly 800 toys through its annual Toys for Tots holiday drive.
The Michael Brim Humanitarian Award – Pastor Guy Jean Florival of the Haitian Church of God
The Michael Brim Humanitarian Award honors an individual or entity that embodies an enthusiastic spirit of inclusion in Asbury Park. Pastor Guy Jean Florival of the Haitian Church of God works tirelessly to bring together the community of Asbury Park. His leadership helps steer ministries for Asbury Park men, women and youth seeking spiritual growth and personal development. In addition to his passionate voice for unity, Pastor Florival oversees ongoing relief efforts for those affected by the Haiti earthquake in 2010.
The Business Partnership Award – TAKA
The Business Partnership Award honors a local business that has maintained a consistent and dedicated presence in the Asbury Park community. This year’s honor will be awarded to Takahiro Hirai, the thriving restaurateur and owner of TAKA, an upscale, vibrant Japanese restaurant in the city’s downtown. Founded in 2005, restaurant TAKA not only has established itself as a staple in the city’s vibrant dining scene, but is an active supporter of community development and philanthropy. TAKA supports Asbury Park First Saturday events, sponsors free parking for guests of the city, events and more. In addition to its local efforts, TAKA’S philanthropic spirit was taken to new heights this year. Responding to the crisis in Japan, TAKA spearheaded American Japanese Friendship Day, a fundraising event that donated nearly $25,000.00 for tsunami relief efforts.
The Asbury Park Mayor’s Ball is a charitable event that helps raise awareness for The Asbury Park Mayor’s Ball Foundation. Established in 2010, the Mayor’s Ball Foundation benefits college and technical-bound students of Asbury Park to begin the work of living their dreams. The Foundation provides funding for scholarships, recreational programming, internship opportunities and community health initiatives. The Asbury Park Mayor’s Ball Foundation is a 501(C)(3) tax deductible organization.
