Left-turn lanes, upgraded traffic signal being added

HAZLET, NJ – Road reconstruction is under way at the intersection of Bethany and Holmdel roads. Contractors are adding left-turn lanes to all four approaches and upgrading the traffic signal.

A $624,772 contract was awarded last year to Z Brothers Concrete Contractors Inc. of Sayreville. Work began on Sept. 15 but stopped after drainage pipes were installed so the utilities could be moved. Jersey Central Power & Light Co., Verizon, Comcast Cable, Shoreland Water Co. and New Jersey Natural Gas Co. had to relocate their utilities.

The bad winter further delayed the project, but the utility work was completed in the spring and contractors were back on site June 9.

“This is an important intersection upgrade that will keep traffic in that area flowing,” said Freeholder John P. Curley, who oversees the county’s Department of Public Works and Engineering. “While we have no control over the utilities, we are working finish this project by the end of August.”

The intersection improvements consist of replacement of the existing signal with a new semi-actuated traffic signal and minor roadway widening at the intersection to accommodate left turning lanes at all approaches. Also included are drainage pipes and inlets, replacement of curbs, sidewalks and driveway aprons, signage and striping, top-soiling and seeding.
