Sandy Hook, NJ – For the seventh consecutive year, the New Jersey Sea Grant Consortium (NJSGC) will present Happiness is a Horseshoe Crab, a popular family-oriented special program that offers participants an ideal opportunity to observe and learn all about horseshoe crabs as they make their annual ritual migration to the beaches to spawn. The program will take place Saturday, June 11th at 6:30 p.m. on Sandy Hook.

Happiness is a Horseshoe Crab focuses on the prehistoric creature’s connection to the spring tides and includes a fully-guided excursion of Sandy Hook Bay.  It’s intentionally held at night and close to the full moon in early June, during the height of the crab’s spawning season. Since horseshoe crabs prefer the cover of darkness, program participants should expect to find horseshoe crabs navigating their way around the shallow waters and shorelines of Sandy Hook’s bay beaches.

“The program provides a perfect way for families to share a fun evening out that also offers an excellent educational opportunity to learn about horseshoe crabs in their

own environment, “ said Jessica Staats, NJSGC Education and Outreach Coordinator, who leads the annual horseshoe crab trek. “This program one of our most memorable and popular educational experiences because it gives youngsters and adults alike a chance to interact with a living fossil.”

Space is limited for this popular program and pre-registration is required.   The cost is $8 per person and children under 3 are free. To register or learn more about it call 872-1300 Ext. 20.
