MILLSTONE, NJ –Kevin McSorley of Charleston Springs Golf Course took home his second title in as many weeks when he won the Monmouth County Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament at Charleston Springs Golf Course in Millstone, May 14-15, 2011.
Kevin had at least a few things going for him heading into this competition. He was coming off another big win and his first state title. Kevin took first place at the New Jersey State Golf Association (NJSGA) Mid Amateur Championship at Deal County Club on May 5. That’s an impressively solid start to the season for this Jersey City firefighter, and father of two. He is able to switch from daddy-duty to competitive golfer in his off-time, with support from his wife who works nearby–he can drop the children off and catch a late round when she finishes work. Kevin also receives support in the form of text messages from his co-workers at the firehouse.

Kevin was up against some serious competition. According to Alan Roberts, Manager of Golf Facilities for the Monmouth County Park System, “this was one of the strongest fields of competitors in the 20 years I’ve been running this tournament.” Among them was another

state titleholder from the county golf system, Eric Lafante of Hominy Hill who took 4th place.
Last July, Eric won the 2010 NJSGA Public Links Championship, also held at Charleston Springs. This was a notable win, since Eric had stepped away from competitive play for awhile to begin his career at an investment fund company in Philadelphia. Now settled into his new job, Eric enjoys playing a few rounds every week, at both Hominy Hill and Charleston Springs, including each weekend with his dad.
Other golfers who placed in this tournament include Ricky Slagle of Howell Park Golf Course in second place with a 146, and Marc Grinberg who tied Eric Lafante with a 147, in third place. The complete list of winners is as follows:
