ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – Paige Huff, a sixth grader at the Atlantic Highlands Elementary School was named the local winner of the Atlantic Highlands Lions Club Peace Poster contest.

Her poster was chosen out of local entries submitted to the contest by AHES art teacher Caroline Northrop who used the poster contest as part of a class lesson.

Paige’s poster, which mixed images of international flags, a peace sign, and a house, has now been entered into the International Lion’s Club district contest.

Paige Huff receives her Lions Club Peace Poster Contest winning award from member Lee Hoffman.

“Her work is among hundreds of thousands around the world who are sharing their vision of peace,” Atlantic Highlands Lions Club member Lee Hoffman told attendees at the organization’s 85th Anniversary dinner held at the Shore Casino.

Also cited during the ceremony was contest runner-up Hannah Moses, who was honored at the dinner with a certificate and cash prize.

The poster contest was judged by local artists Don Voorhees and Patricia Hecht.

Hoffman said the two finalists were “very close,” with Paige’s getting the edge from the judges who were unaware of who created the artwork.

Paige described her poster as “an everyday neighborhood plugging in peace to make the whole world light up.”

Each of the entries – along with a copy of Huff’s winning poster – now hangs in store windows on First Ave. in Atlantic Highlands.

The 23rd annual Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest is geared to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people around the globe.

Local winners move onto a district contest, multiple district finals, and eventually an international round.

One grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners will be selected. The grand prize winner gets a cash award of $5,000 along with a trip to Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners get a certificate and $500.
