Katja Esson & Mark Doty Headline at Brookdale Series

Lincroft, NJ – Brookdale Community College’s celebrated Visited Writers Series for Fall 2010 will feature two writers on December 8 at 7 p.m. in the Warner Student Life Center Navesink rooms I&II.

Katja Esson is a German-born, New York-based writer/director who mixes documentary, narrative and experimental genres. Esson began her career in Miami as a production assistant for the notorious rap group 2 Live Crew. She has directed a variety of award-winning documentaries, short films and commercials.

Esson’s Poetry of Resilience is a feature-length documentary by the Academy Award nominated director about survivors who endured war, genocide and political persecution and turned to poetry to help them survive. From Rwanda, Japan, China, Iran, Poland and Iraqi Kurdistan and into exile in the United States, Canada and Great Britain, the film follows six stories of survival, six poets and one shared question: How strong is the human spirit?

Mark Doty teaches at Rutgers and has written twelve books of poetry and three memoirs. In 1989, his partner, Wally Roberts tested positive for HIV which drastically influenced Doty’s writing. Robert’s death in 1994 inspired Doty to write Atlantis, and Heaven’s Coast:  A Memoir also dealing with this subject. In 1995, Doty won the T.S. Eliot Prize for Poetry, the first American poet to have done so.
