Atlantic Highlands, NJ – The Atlantic Highlands First Aid & Safety Squad cadets will participate in the borough’s town-wide garage sale May 15, starting at 9 a.m.
The award-winning squad will also use the day as a chance to throw open its doors to the community. There will be two free CPR awareness classes and free blood pressure checks. And, the organization has also extended the deadline for its “Design an Ambulance” student poster contest until May 28.
The cadets, an organization for students between the ages of 14 and 18, will use all proceeds from the sale to fund future projects for the group. The cadets are budding first aiders, who practice first aid techniques, and once they get to be 16 are allowed to ride the ambulance to certain types of calls.
“Last year’s garage sale was a great fundraiser for the cadets and we are hoping to build on that this year,” said Tom Hayden, AHFAS 1st Lieutenant and the cadets’ advisor. “The community was also able to see a side of the organization they don’t often get to experience.”
The cadets will have for sale gently used books, home goods, as well as a collection of new DVDs and other nice items.

Members of the all-volunteer first aid squad will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions about the organization. For 80 years, the AHFAS has been providing free, around-the-clock emergency medical and rescue services to the borough and surrounding areas. The squad operates on the generous donations from the borough and the community.
The town-wide garage sale is staged annually by the borough’s Recreation Department, which provides maps of participating homes on the morning of the sale. The rain date is May 16.
Given the amount of activity on garage sale day, the AHFAS poster contest deadline has been extended until May 28, with the winners decided on May 31.
The sale starts at 9 a.m. CPR awareness sessions will be presented at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. and are open to anyone.
“Opening our doors during the town-wide garage sale is a great way for the community to see up-close the Atlantic Highlands First Aid & Safety Squad,” said Chief Richard Huff. “By offering free CPR awareness classes we’ll give residents a chance to take a break from shopping and learn a life-saving skill.”
