Left-turn lanes were added to ease congestion
MIDDLETOWN, NJ – The Monmouth County Board of Chosen Freeholders joined local officials today in dedicating a newly renovated intersection and traffic signal that will ease congestion in the area of Cherry Tree Farm Road (County Route 516) and Leonardville Road (County Route 50).
Left-hand turn lanes were added at all four approaches of Cherry Tree Farm Road, Leonardville Road, New Monmouth Road and Tindall Road. At Middletown’s request and expense, the county also reconfigured the intersection of nearby Tindall Road and Park Avenue.
Without the turning lanes, traffic was backing up on all four approaches, particularly in the afternoon when school lets out. There are several schools and a church in the immediate area.
“It s a beautiful new intersection with updated traffic signals and safe, well-marked pedestrian crosswalks,” Freeholder Director Lillian G. Burry said. “This will go a long way toward easing the traffic congestion at peak travel times, which is most afternoons when schools are in session.”

“Monmouth County does great job working with municipalities to identify dangerous or congested roads and fixing them,” Freeholder Deputy Director Robert D. Clifton said. “This project was probably long overdue but a welcome change for residents n this area.”
“This is a great day for the residents in this area who travel these roads on a daily basis,” said Freeholder John P. Curley, who oversees the county’s Department of Public Works and Engineering. “There were unforeseen delays due to difficulties scheduling the necessary utility work, which was compounded by the severe winter weather. I thank the residents for their patience.”
“The newly completed intersection has already had a noticeable effect on traffic flow in an area that once saw chronic backups and difficult turning situations,” Mayor Gerard P. Scharfenberger said. “The improvements mitigate traffic congestion and remove dangerous conditions caused by an antiquated junction that was easily overwhelmed during peak traffic periods.”
The project was designed by T&M Associates of Middletown and was inspected by HNTB Corporation of Wayne with direction from the county’s Department of Public Works and Engineering. The project was built by Lucas Construction Inc. of Marlboro at an estimated cost of $797,521. Of that price, Middletown will pick up the cost of realigning the Tindall Road/Park Avenue intersection, which is expected to be about $30,000.
