Asbury Park NJ – Thirst-e Productions, in collaboration with The Showroom, presents Patrick Marber’s infamous tale of love, sex and betrayal “Closer” April 8-10 2010.
This is the premier performance of Thirst-e Productions, which is a labor of love of some dedicated theater folks, who strive to present exciting “outside the box” productions for the Monmouth County theater goer. “Closer” has proven to be quite the undertaking. Originally slated to be co-produced with an established theater that lost its lease, Thirst-e soon found itself homeless. With the majority of Monmouth County “community theaters” being housed in buildings on church properties, or associated with religious establishments in some way no one would touch “Closer” and it’s risqué content with a ten foot pole. Those theaters that we were willing to help found themselves unable due to scheduling conflicts and insurance issues.
That is when the good people at The Showroom stepped in. Asbury Park is well known for its arts community and “Closer” was warmly welcomed. The Showroom is a hot new venue for all kinds of work including independent film, poetry readings and comedy jams. Closer, a dark comedy about love, infidelities and heartbreak is an adult exploration of our greatest need-to love and be loved in return and how we hurt each other too easily. It is a bold play that won awards in London and on Broadway and was an Oscar nominated movie. There is much frank sex talk and violent arguments among the lovers and cheaters. With scenes taking place in strip clubs and online sex chatrooms, and a multi-media assault on the senses, “Closer” is a show not for the timid but for an audience hungry for real drama that sticks to the ribs and will cause debate among couples and friends.
“Closer” stars a revelatory group of young actors who bring heat and sex appeal to their parts. Locals Anthony Younes (Holmdel) and Tammy Owens (Cliffwood Beach) burn up the stage with their torrid love affair, while Samantha Ambler (Long Branch) and CJ Nolan (Atlantic Highlands) squeeze your heart until it breaks as badly as their characters do. It is directed by Steve Hirsekorn (Neptune City).
Closer runs April 8 & 9 at 8pm and April 10 at 7pm at The Showroom, 708 Cookman Ave., Asbury Park. Tickets are $20 and are available at 732-495-9591 or on www.eBay.com (Item # 250593561015).
