I don’t get it.
For those of you who don’t watch reality television, The Real Housewives of New Jersey is the latest in Bravo Television’s “Real Housewives” series. I’ll say it again: I don’t get it.
We all know, of course, that there is very little reality in “real” television, but shouldn’t there be a modicum of truth in a series that supposedly peeks into the everyday lives of real housewives? There is absolutely no truth in Bravo’s new series, at least none that I can relate to.
The Real Housewives of New Jersey takes place in Franklin Lakes, and revolves around five narcissistic women who have no idea that they are living in a bubble. Sure, it would be nice to have their free flowing discretionary income, but I, for one, have far more important things to be concerned about than competing with the neighbors, or how big my hair is (correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t big hair go out with the seventies?) These ladies spend a lot of time pampering themselves, and worrying about their appearance. One “real” New Jersey housewife believes it’s important to teach her daughters how to be “fabulous.” I’ll bet that lesson has nothing to do with education. Obviously, these so-called “real” housewives are unaware of our country’s economic crisis, or they wouldn’t be flaunting their privileged lives quite so insensitively.
If you’re tuning into The Real Housewives of New Jersey to see how women in our state live, you’ll be disappointed, and perhaps a bit insulted. Reality shows like this one, and its predecessor, The Real Housewives of New York, define the word “shallow.” There’s nothing “real” in either show. I don’t know any local housewives that have cooks, regularly visit spas in preparation for a night on the town, shop in high heels, or hire professional decorators to redo their condos and brownstones. The Jersey housewives I know clip coupons, car pool, squeeze their haircut appointments in between the kids’ doctor’s appointments or soccer games, wear running shoes and sweats, and shop during the power hours at Kohl’s.

Oh, now I get it! I understand! The show isn’t about “The Real Housewives of New Jersey;” it’s for the real housewives of New Jersey. I guess Bravo Television wants New Jersey housewives to watch and envy how the “other half” lives. I don’t know about you, but life in a bubble does not appeal to me. I won’t be tuning back in.
