Tony Campolo, an internationally known sociologist and Christian author, tells a story about a clerk in an expensive store who in a burst of frustration changed all the price tags.  Thus, for a couple of hours a $1,500 coat would be sold for $250 and a suit of $150 would be sold for $1,000.  In addition to the confusion, the real surprise was how many people bought these items not thinking anything about the discrepancy.

ImageTrying to figure out the current political spectrums reminded me of this story.  I think that somebody has switched the price tags.

One of these price tags has to do with friendships.  I am surprised at how many friendships evaporated over night and those people who thought that they had friends found that their supposed friends thought much less of them.  To have political friends these days is meaningless because in a couple of days or years, they could become political enemies.

Wall Street capitalism became socialism overnight.  The debate now is who is more socialistic – the Democrats or the Republicans.  The Republicans were in the White House and the Democrats controlled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and one has to assume that the Wall Street people were evenly divided.  Senator Obama wants to help by giving money in one way and Senator McCain in another.  The result is that both want to stimulate the economy by giving money.

For many years, the majority of the evangelicals were loading their politics with moral issues – abortion, homosexuality, euthanasia, and stem cell research.  Two years ago, there was an expansion of the moral issues chart; poverty, children, and environmental issues became a part of the bigger picture.  The new evangelicals group was featured in the New York Times and some things seemed to be amiss.  The journalists emphasized the expansion in contrast to the other issues. Very soon after that, some of the older moral issues were dropped in favor of the newer ones or no longer seen as important.

One issue positions were sidelined.  People were mocked if they declared that for them one issue is the most important, such as the abortion issue. Such people were considered narrow in their political views.  However, within the last weeks, we are told that all the issues are paling in significance and the only issue now is the economy.  Thus, the two candidates are evaluated extensively on how they have reacted during economic crisis times and how much confidence voters have in them to pull us out of the mess.

An informed democracy is the best thing that we can hope for this election and every election. Read, listen, discuss, and pray.  Above all, know that who wins is already known by the Lord and He is the sovereign ruler of the universe.
