ImageIn one of the anthems that our choir sings, Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ is asked: "Mary did you know that your child who will be born is the Savior of the world?"

In looking at all the women who have been involved in the promise of Jesus Christ as the Savior, did they understand, did they know what God was telling them?

Did Eve, the mother of us all, understand when God gave her the promise that through the seed of the woman Satan would be defeated?  Was she able to comprehend that the one who deceived them, and because of their complicity they would be thrown out of the Garden of Eden, the Devil would be defeated by her seed?

Did Sarah understand the promise that God would miraculously give unto her a son?  She succumbed to the local culture by supplying Hagar so that she would have a son, but that was not the promise of God.  Did she understand when Abraham told her the promise of God that through her seed all the nations of the earth will be blessed?

Was that the wife of Isaiah who received the promise that Emmanuel, God with us will be born?  Even though the prophecy has a double meaning with a child being born and one promised, did she understand what God was telling them?

When I listen to some people tell us that the only things that we should accept are those things that we fully understand, I can see that the world would be indeed very small.

Mary's answer has to be "most likely not."  All the women who carried the promise of Jesus understood as through a glass darkly.  By faith we understand that the world was made by things that were not in existence.  By faith I understand that the promise given as Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden became fulfilled.  When God speaks to us, most of us are in Mary's posture of ‘how can this be?"  Even when God explains things to us, we do not get the full picture, a comprehensive understanding.  With Mary we have to submit ourselves joyfully to the will of God and proclaim: "Let it be done to me according to your word."
