IT'S GOOD TO HEAR Just before and after 9/11 I had become friends with Captain Gary White Captain of the US Arctic stationed out of Earl Pier. This was the basis for the story in my archives “A World within a World” written on March 1, 2001. His was one of the first ships in the Gulf during 9/11. I became close the Captain and Crew and followed them by Email for the following 6 months. I received email that was sent back and forth from the various captains and ships involved during that time. Captain Gary White has been transferred and is waiting for his new commission as captain of one or our air craft carriers. I wanted to pass on to you one of the letters his group received. I hope you find it as Interesting as I did. It made me proud of our men serving our country today. Drew Hogan would have loved to read this piece. He died while trying to bring democracy to the people of Iraq.
Dear Danny: This was forwarded to me from a friend in the Philadelphia Navy League. While nothing profound; it reiterates what many of you already know, the portrayal in the media is less than the whole story. Hope all is well, take care. This is a letter from Ray Reynolds, a medic in the Iowa Army National Guard, serving in Iraq: Whitey As I head off to Baghdad for the final weeks of my stay in Iraq, I wanted to say thanks to all of you who did not believe the media. They have done a very poor job of covering everything that has happened. I am sorry that I have not been able to visit all of you during my two week leave back home. And just so you can rest at night knowing something is happening in Iraq that is noteworthy, I thought I would pass this on to you. This is the list of things that has happened in Iraq recently: (Please share! It with your friends and compare it to the version that your paper is producing.) * Over 400,000 kids have up-to-date immunizations. Don't believe for one-second that these people do not want us there. I have met many, many people from Iraq that want us there, and in a bad way. They say they will n ever see the freedoms we talk about but they hope their children will. We are doing a good job in Iraq and I challenge anyone, anywhere to dispute me on these facts. So If you happen to run into John Kerry, be sure to give him my e-mail address and send him to Denison, Iowa. This soldier will set him straight. If you are like me and very disgusted with how this period of rebuilding has been portrayed, e-mail this to a friend and let them know there are good things happening.
