KEANSBURG DEDICATES 9/11 MEMORIAL

This past Sunday under clear skies on a September evening so reminiscent of the weather on 9/11/01 the Borough of Keansburg unveiled a memorial to the events of that day four years ago. The monument is in front of Bay Walk East located at the back of the parking lot at the foot of Main Street. It is in front of the flagpole at that location. During the ceremony, a flag that was flown over a base in Afghanistan by troops serving in operation Enduring Freedom was flown on the flagpole. The memorial as shown in the picture is a marble headstone. Cathy Ryan of Ryan’s Funeral home donated the monument and engraving was donated by Joseph Uras. The memorial was the culmination of work begun four year ago by members of American Legion Post 273 from our town. The dedication ceremony took place under the direction of Keansburg Borough Councilperson and former Mayor George Huff who served as the Master of Ceremonies. The ceremonies lasted just about an hour and included speeches presented by Councilpersons George Hoff and Patrick Pecora and our Mayor Lisa Strydio. Additionally speaking at the event was Assemblyman Joseph Azzolina. Reverend Schulties and Pastor Barbara offered invocations during the ceremonies. Sarah Sarafin sang the National Anthem and a moving rendition of God Bless America was offered by Darren.

The monument itself stands on a concrete base that is shaped in the form of a pentagon in memory of the attack that day on the Pentagon. The monument itself is engraved with the twin towers. As the dedication progressed the tribute in light from the site of the towers in New York was visible behind the monument and in the distance across the bay.

On behalf of the borough council, I would like to thank all who contributed over the past four years to this monument. I would also like to thank all members American Legion Post 273, Cathy Ryan, Joseph Uras, members of the Keansburg Borough Councils past and present, employees or Keansburg, our Department of Public Works, our fire and EMS volunteers, our police department and anyone else who participated in the dedication of the memorial. If there are people who worked on the project or attended the dedication who are not specifically mentioned here please know that you also have our thanks. I am sure as always I have forgotten to mention someone but please know it was unintentional.

Additionally the borough is still accepting donations for the monument. For information on donating, please contact our borough clerk or our deputy borough clerk at 732-787-0215.
