KEANSBURG COUNCIL REORGANIZES AND LIBRARY NEWS

This past Wednesday, 7/6, there was a special reorganization meeting of the Keansburg Borough Council. During this meeting, a new Mayor Lisa Strydio and Deputy Mayor Andrew Murray were sworn into office. They both were voted into the new positions by a unanimous council vote. Lisa Strydio moved up from the position of Deputy Mayor as George Hoff stepped down from the position of mayor. Mayor Lisa Strydio was read the oath of office by our outgoing mayor George Hoff with members of her family holding the bible. Chief Raymond O’Hare read Deputy Mayor Andrew Murray the oath of office at the request of the new Deputy Mayor. Some people always suspect that there are reasons for mayoral changes but in our town, that is not the case. As some of you may already know, our town is organized under the Faulkner Act Plan B. Under our form of government, you the citizens who do vote, elect five at large councilpersons. Those five councilpersons then chose a mayor and deputy mayor from among themselves.

During this meeting, there was great news on some progress with the library. Our borough manager informed the council that earlier that day, 7/6, we had finally received a temporary certificate of occupancy for the library building. This means that the volunteers can begin the work of moving in the donated shelving, furniture, desks, books and other supplies. There is a final meeting that will be scheduled between the Borough Manager, The project engineer, the library volunteers, the head of our public works department and most likely members of the council that should take place on Thursday 7/14.

In addition to the above information, there was one ordinance and eleven resolutions on the agenda at the start of the meeting for council consideration. Two more resolutions were added during the meeting. The ordinance that was only introduced during this meeting was ordinance #1382 that amends the bond ordinance (#1347) for the reconstruction of Raritan Avenue and other streets in the vicinity. This reconstruction may also include some work on portions of East Shore, Fox Avenue Oak Street, Center Avenue and Carr Avenue.

Resolution number 147 was the appointment of Bill Povalak as a class two member of the planning and zoning board. Resolution number 148 approved Deputy Mayor Andrew Murray as a class three member of the planning and zoning board. Resolution number 149 was the appoitment of Gerald Massell as the Borough prosecutor and resolution number 150 appointed Thomas Barlow as the public defender. Resolution number 151 sets the temporary municipal tax levy. Resolution 152 allows the creation of a temporary budget in the amount of $10,174,939.40. Resolution 153 allows for a temporary capitol budget. Resolution number 154 designates our whole town as a rehabilitation area, I may have some more to say on this one in another article. Resolution number 155 was a refund of a fire permit fee. Resolution number 156 was a refund for a tax overpayment. Resolution number 157 designated Terence Wall our borough manager as a hearing officer for the borough. Resolutions number 158 and 159 were the two that were added during the meeting. Resolution number 158 was the awarding of the bid for the reconstruction of Raritan Avenue which goes along with the ordinance (#1382) that was introduce earlier in the meeting. The reconstruction of Raritan Avenue should start later this summer. Lastly, resolution number 159 was the settlement of a legal matter brought against the town by a former and now again current employee of our water department.
