HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING AND THANKS FOR ALL INVOLVED

After two weather related cancelled attempts at lighting our town’s new Holiday tree mother nature finally cooperated on Monday 12/13. On a chilly December night before a crowd that I would estimate to be close to three hundred participants the switch was finally thrown and the tree was lit. I would like to say this was one of the largest crowds I have seen in recent years. Helping with the lighting was the family of the man who donated the new tree to our town. The new tree was dedicated in memory of his father.

Before I forget, I would like to wish the happiest of holidays to all the readers of this column and their families. I would like to send wishes of good cheer to all at this time of year. I know it is a holiday to which the youngest members of our community look forward. However, I am sure it comes to all of us with memories of holidays past, families and loved ones. During this joyous season, I would like to remind everyone to take a moment to remember the men and women of our armed forces serving overseas.

Now on to a long list of those who need to be thanked, as there are always so many who help make this event special for our town. I would like to begin by thanking my fellow members of the Keansburg Borough Council for all their help coordinating the many facets of this event. I want to thank the members of the Keansburg Recreation Advisory Board who often volunteer much of their own time to assist with such town events. I want to thank our Borough Clerk / Acting Borough manager for his help. Special thanks goes out to the members of the Keansburg Police Department, the volunteers of Manning Place Fire Company and New Point Comfort for their assistance with lights and trucks. It is our fire volunteers who each year delivers our special guests Santa and the lovely Mrs. Claus to our event and I would like to thank them for their participation. I would also be remiss if I did not thank the ladies auxiliary for their wonderful hot chocolate and refreshments that were quite handy to have on a chilly evening.

Next, I want to thank the volunteers of the Keansburg EMS squad for their assistance. I want to thank the members of our Department of Public Works without them the new tree would not have been planted and decorated. Additional thanks go out to Reverend Barbara for her blessings and invocations. One of the highlights of this event each year has been the holiday renditions played by our very own award winning Bolger School band. I would like to thank each of the band members, the band director and all the parents of the band members and their families. Their music each year makes the event special for all of us. I want to thank the Keansburg Pharmacy for their continued support of recreation events in our town. For this event, they donated all of the candy canes.

This year something special and different was done at our tree lighting. Thanks to the suggestion of councilperson Drew Murray, the children at our Port Monmouth Road School made a variety of hand crafted decorations for the tree. After the lighting many of the children placed their own creation on the tree. I want to thank the staff, teachers and students of the Port Monmouth Road School for their contributions.

Now I want to send out a very special thanks to the family and the man who donated the new tree to our borough for this year. He asked that his name not be mentioned and I am honoring that request I just want him to know he has our special thanks the thanks of all who saw the new tree. Many people at the event commented on the beauty of the tree.

Lastly, if there is anyone, any group or organization that participated whom I forgot to mention above please know that it was not intentional. You too have our thanks and appreciation.
