MEMORIAL DAY PARADE AND LIBRARY DEDICATION

Under clear and brightly sunlit skies on Sunday May 30 Keansburg held its fortieth annual Memorial Day Parade. It really was a wonderful day for a parade as the weather was perfect. Though the parade stepped off to a little bit of a delayed start, the town enjoyed the parade. The Grand Marshall for this year’s parade was veteran John Randal.

Randal was led by representatives from Keansburg American Legion Post 273. In the parade and spaced between 4 bands were representatives of many organizations in our town and surrounding towns. For instance, from Hazlet, we had the West Keansburg Fire Company #1 and from Union Beach, we had representation from their senior organization. I know I will forget to name some of the many organizations marching in the parade but I wanted to mention those that I remember. We had of course our Mayor and Council in the parade in addition to the three councilpersons elect. In addition, from our town we had representation from all of the children’s sports organizations for the first time in many years. We had representatives marching from Keansburg Youth Association, Keansburg Baseball and Softball, and Keansburg Pop Warner with representatives of both the football players and the cheerleaders. We had participation by both Keansburg Fire Companies, their ladies auxiliaries the EMS volunteers and the EMS cadets. A vehicle carrying some of residents from the Bayside Manor assisted Living center followed them. Additionally participating from our town was the Keansburg Historical Society with a float, Keansburg High School Honor Society and the Keansburg High School Key Club. The flags at the beginning of the parade were carried by color guards from Naval Weapons Station Earl and the Coast Guard Station at Sandy Hook. There was a Humvee from Fort Dix and a World War 2 jeep. Miss New Jersey and the East Coast USA Supreme Queen (9 year old pageant winner) participated. I want to thank all who participated including those whom I may have forgot to mention specifically in the list here. I also want to take a moment to thank the Memorial Day Parade Committee and everyone else that volunteered and assisted with organizing the parade for our town this year.

First, I want to dispel one of the many rumors that have spread around our town like wildfire since the recent election. One of those rumors in particular concerned the library. Just this past Thursday evening during the council meeting and in conversations afterwards two of the newly elected council people who were at the meeting denied the rumors. In fact, they said they were going forward with the library.

Now on to some information about our new public library, I am hoping that by now many of our residents would have had a chance to walk or drive by the library site on Shore Boulevard. This would be for no other reason then to see the construction of our first freestanding public library. Perhaps you may have read by now or heard that our town will be having a dedication ceremony for the library building on Wednesday June 30 at 6 PM at the building itself. In addition to the dedication, it will be the first chance residents will have to obtain a library card for use at the new library when it opens. This library will provide full accessibility to all areas for all who use the facility.

Some of the many programs planned to be offered at the Keansburg Waterfront Public Library when it opens will be: Training classes and hands on demonstrations from area vendors and organizations; adult reading programs where volunteers will provide one on one tutoring and High School Summer Reading Programs. Some other features our Keansburg Waterfront Public Library will offer are: seminars and meetings; presentations, movies and other public events; a children’s library from Pre-K up; Periodicals, audio and video collections, an outdoor reading room overlooking Raritan Bay and the New York Skyline; a computer room with internet access and a copier for public use.

The new Keansburg Waterfront Public Library has a web site however like our library it is also still mostly under construction at this time. However, I wanted to be the first to publish the web site address it is: www.keansburglibrary.us. Currently the web site is being built and maintained by some of the members of our library committee and the volunteers.

Upcoming Council meetings.

There are two meetings of the Keansburg Borough Council scheduled for the month of June. The first meeting for June will be held on Thursday, June 10 at 5:30 PM and the second will be on Thursday, June 24 at 7 PM. As usual, all meetings will be held in the Borough Council Chambers at Keansburg Borough Hall.

Upcoming Borough Events.

Comedy Show – Fund Raiser – The New Point Comfort Fire Company will be hosting the first of what is being called an annual Comedy show. I think being at the first of any event that may be continued is a great way to start a new tradition. This show will be held at the New Point Comfort Firehouse on Carr Avenue on Saturday, June 5, 2004. Doors will open for admission starting at 6 PM and the show will begin at 8 PM. Advance ticket purchases are available for $10.00 and tickets will also be sold at the door on the day of the event for $15.00. So save the 5 bucks and purchase some advance tickets to support our volunteers. Tickets can be purchased online through the fire company web site, www.newpointcomfort.org, or by coming to the fire house on Sundays and Tuesdays after 6:00 pm.

Library Dedication Ceremony – The dedication ceremony for the new Keansburg Waterfront Public Library will be held on Wednesday June 30 at 6PM. The dedication will be held at the library itself and library cards will be available for distribution on that day. All residents are invited to the dedication ceremony. Please visit the new web site for the library at www.keanburglibrary.us  (please note much of the site is like the library still under construction).
