KEANSBURG TO HAVE TITAN 5K TOWN RUN IN THE SPRING

There are plans in the works to bring a 5 K run to the Borough of Keansburg for this spring.  The idea was brought up though the efforts of Bronawyn O’ Leary a teacher at Keansburg High School.  Currently the event is being planned for May 17, 2003 starting at 9:30 AM in the Parking lot of the Keansburg High School.  The event has already been approved as a school fundraiser and the proceeds will benefit the American Heart Association, the Class of 2006 and one other town charity to be determined by the town council.  There was a discussion of this race during the Keansburg Borough Council meeting on 1/9/03.   The course for the race as outlined in information we have received from the organizers is as follows:  Starting in the High School parking lot, left onto Port Monmouth Road, right on Harding, Left on Church Street, Cross Main Street, right on Carr, right on Beachway to Main Street, left on Forest, Left on Port Monmouth Road and right into the High school.  Any remaining distance will be made up on the school property.

All of the other council members and I think this is a fantastic idea.  We would like to thank the organizers of this event for their initiative and we will support them in any possible way.  I personally would like to see an annual 5 K run around our town.  In fact, we briefly started to discuss this possibility during Recreation Board meetings a few months back.  I am glad to see that someone is taking a lead role in making the race happen at least for this year.

Other action during the Keansburg Borough Council meeting on 1/9/03

In other action during the 1/9/03 Borough Council meeting the Borough appointed Stephen Pheffer as the town’s Chief Financial Officer at no additional charge.  He was already working for the borough as a financial consultant.  The borough also amended the 2003 budget.  One of the amendments added funding back into the budget to fully fund the volunteer’s clothing allowances.  Other amendments also reduced the overall total amount of the budget to just about $9.6 million dollars.  This reduction came as the result of some extra work on the budget by the Borough Manager, the Mayor and the town’s auditor.

The Harbor Committee had members appointed or reappointed to five seats.  The council voted to approve the settlement of a case.  The council voted on the payment of bills and the appointment of a special legal council.  The town hired a special council to defend the town in insurance lawsuits.  Lastly, the appointment of a public defender for the town was tabled until the meeting on 1/23/09 to give the council time to review the resumes submitted for the position.

There were also some discussion items on the agenda which included the Titan 5 K run I mentioned above and a presentation by NW Financial Group.  NW Financial group is an organization that has a special program to help towns save money on insurance costs.  Members of this organization and some of the council people met back in November recently at the League of Municipalities Convention in Atlantic City.  They presented some information on their program to the council.  The will be supplying additional information including written documentation on the program to the council at our request.
