As the violence between Lebanon and Israel continues, the death toll in both countries is rising. This is a situation that is steadily spiraling out of control and the destruction and loss of life is growing increasingly evident.

I believe that it is imperative that the United States continue to support Israel in its efforts to secure a swift and lasting end to this violent conflict. Israel, like all countries, has a right and duty to protect its citizens when its borders and population are threatened. It is important that in the United States we evaluate our role in this situation and determine ways in which we can support and facilitate a path towards peace.

Israel is on the front line of the fight against terrorism and we must support efforts to protect its citizens and ultimately the citizens of Lebanon who are being hurt by Hezbollah’s presence. Hezbollah is a terrorist organization that has attempted to ingrain itself into Lebanese society and government. They have apparently generated popular support by funding modest social programs, particularly in southern Lebanon. This makes it evident that Hezbollah must be defeated not only militarily but also in the hearts and minds of the Lebanese people.

Perhaps if the United States focused a small fraction of what we are spending to support military action in the Middle East on humanitarian efforts and social programs in Lebanon, we could more effectively assist in stabilizing the Lebanese government. A strong government would be able to provide much-needed services to its population as well as maintain control over its territory. This could quite possibly diminish any benefits that citizens might currently see in supporting organizations like Hezbollah.

It is clear that the struggles presently facing the Middle East did not begin overnight. It would be naïve to think that a solution can be created without serious effort and determination from all parties. It is essential that the United States continue to support Israel in its efforts to defeat Hezbollah and make the region, and subsequently the world, safer.
