June 21st...1st day of Summer...4 PM...Memorial Highway, Atlantic Highlands
Two youngsters, about age 10, were riding their bicycles lickty-split down the highway (on the road) barely on the side of the road...one blonde boy and a long haired brunette girl with a left silver eyebrow piercing...cute kids...BUT...how lucky they were today! They didn't learn the rules of riding bicycles...
First they had no helmets...! Second they were paying no attention to the rather heavy traffic riding somewhat back and forth on the outside lane of the highway. And Third...while going West on Memorial Highway, they rode right through the red light with not so much as a glance to see if there was any traffic!
Prior to becoming the third car in line at the red light...the traffic "passing" them had to slow cautiously around them as they drove by the two. While stopped at the light, they "caught up" and went speeding by all traffic right on across Grand Avenue without so much as a glance of any potential traffic. A car coming from the Navesink side onto the highway braked and honked the horn. Fortunately...there was no traffic on the Atlantic Highlands side of Grand Avenue.
I followed and passed them again...going to the next street that I could turn off on to stop them. They were polite...but had no idea that a car had honked at them...say nothing of the thought of any danger they put themselves in. I gave them some basic bicycle rules of the highway...and considering their age and Memorial Highway suggested they finish their ride on the sidewalk! This they did...crossing First Avenue continuing on...
Summer is here...and the minds of the "little ones" have taken a vacation as well...please teach your youngsters the rules of safe bicycling...and as these next few weeks go on...let's pray that these two youngsters from the Atlantic Highlands area remain safe!
