HIGHLANDS ENDURES THE WINDS OF CHANGE

Since moving to Highlands, I've always wondered why it wasn't more of a "hit" among the shore-goers. We are the closest town to a National Park that draws visitors nationally and internationally.

Your article about the fall elections for town council (06/01/2006 ahherald.com "HIGHLANDS DEMOCRATS ATTACK REPUBLICAN SUPER MAJORITY - REPUBLICAN CANDIDATES WELCOME THE CHALLENGE") pin points the divisive internal politics of the town council office have resulted in the squashing of any new enterprise to make the town enjoyable.

It is part of a bigger divide, nationally, effectively causing a rift in the entire Republican party, the overbearance of governance onto the lives of the citizens versus a true and positive vision for the future through organic, American-entrepreurialship-driven GROWTH.

Highlands Business Partnership had MADE this town, in a good many ways, more livable and enjoyable for businesses, residents and visitors alike. Previous to the introduction of the Partnership, it was no wonder when I'd say, "Highlands," people from other areas would say "Oh, Atlantic Highlands, I've heard of that", not realizing that we are separate and distinct; that we are our own entity with a town personality of historical uniqueness.

Recently, as the town leaders "wake up and smell the coffee", realizing we are in the best place on earth, they try to sell it out from under us to developers. I hope this does not become another "Long Branch" with the raging eminent domain war. While progress is good, and I support healthy life for our small businesses, it would be a shame to make this another coastal condo-town and lose all our character, and our resident "characters".

If we must endure the strain of "winds of change", May it not be a hurricane, but let it be a cool ocean breeze that prevails.
