| FULL SERVICE GAS STATION SERVICE IS CONVENIENCE PUBLIC CAN AFFORD |
Jack Archibald observed GOV. CORZINE KNOWS WHEN TO FOLD 'EM, and in his column, Archibald wrote "Instead of focusing on the convenience that drivers in almost every state enjoy, ...", referring to the proposal that NJ switch to a self-service type of gas stations.
"Convenience"? What could be more convenient than sitting in your car and telling the attendant to "fill it up, and check the oil."? Really, there are thousands of elderly men and women who still drive, but would have a difficult time operating the pump, no less checking the oil.
I have driven all over the USA in my lifetime, and I found that it can be VERY inconvenient to the driver who wants to gas up. In many cases, I had to wait in line for a cashier to take my money while she was taking care of kids with a candy bars, or a driver who wanted to pay for a cup of coffee and a can of beans, etc., etc..
In some of these stations it is necessary to first go in and pay a specific amount in advance, at a designated pump, not knowing how much a full tank would cost. In other cases when I would pull up to the designated FULL SERVICE pump, nobody bothered to attend to me.
The cost of a gallon of gasoline varies greatly among the states, and it is the state tax on gasoline that determines the difference.
