STAY THE NIGHT
At the end of daylight
green fingertips of trees
braid pink and purple ribbons
in the sky;
dusk beckons, hushed and grey
after the heat of day;
fireflies play into oblivion,
black and luminescense covers the earth.
The conductor, belying his eighty-plus years, lifts his baton, a sultry soprano's "Summertime"
harmonizes with humidity,
and when the William Tell Overture
is played, men
who were once little boys,
shout "Hi Ho Silver, Away."
The whisper of a breeze and anguish
of "Amazing Grace" send a chill,
while the pulsating strains of "Bolero"
bestow a breathless romantic interlude.
We ride the winding road home.
I coax the curtains loose,
let the moon slip in,
watch our shadows dance on the wall.
