ASBURY HALLOWEEN
'Twas a dark and stormy night,
this last day of the tenth month;
leaves left home and took to the streets,
waves crashed against jettys,
pelted the sand,
yet boards were alive with revelers,
Springsteen masks in place,
costumed in black leather jackets,
rolled up shirt sleeves.
A few Elvis marauders
danced in blue suede shoes.
'Twas a night of ghosts:
painted horses galloped
to calliope sounds of the merry-go-round,
salt water taffy stuck in wisdom teeth,
children howled as they spun
round and round in giant teacups,
stuffed bears, lions and elephants
nestled in winner's arms
and Mrs. Leed's thirteenth child
made his All Hallow's Eve visits to old haunts.
"Born in the U.S.A." rocked through town, and Tillie's wet face smiled
under incandescent lamps.
Eerie sounds of "Amazing Grace"
sailed across the lake
from the nearby cavernous auditorium.
'Twas a dark and stormy night,
a night of now,
a night of then.
