PUZZLEMENT
by Barbara Crocker

In an instant, a picture lies in tatters,
in one split second, a human being is shattered,
in the blink of an eye, a life no longer matters,
in a momentary lapse, we’ve all become mad hatters,
whose thoughts do make an ugly turn
down roads of Hate where vengeance burns
with violent acts our “valor’s” earned
and mankind’s lessons go unlearned –

It is a puzzlement.

Truth’s pieces lie in heaps and piles
surrounding us like misplaced tiles,
an old mosaic out-of-style
revealing sides of man so vile,
we don’t take time to see each bit
where sections just don’t seem to fit
no patience to just think and sit
to find solutions using wit –

It is a puzzlement.

The arguments for sacrifice,
with rationales that do entice
warm blood to turn as cold as ice,
have not been made just once or twice,
throughout the history of man
as far and wide as you can scan
no evidence of Divine Plan
just “men” who we put in command –

It is a puzzlement.

I cannot tell you that I know
the righteous path or way to go
or who’s our fiend or who’s our foe
but in my heart a fear does grow,
the simple fact we just can’t face
a dreadful truth called “human race”
where peace and love have lost their place
and justice means we can abase –

It is a puzzlement.
