LONG BRANCH, NJ – FCS (Family & Children’s Service), Monmouth County’s oldest, private nonprofit social service agency is currently accepting applications for its free Certified Home Health Aide (CHHA) class to be held July 5th through the 26th at Keyport High School in Keyport, NJ.  The 76-hour training program, which can cost upwards of $1,500, is being offered at no cost to students through generous grants from Investors Savings Bank and the Mary Owen Borden Foundation. The grants also include funds to cover many of the associated costs and fees normally absorbed by students, including educational materials, application and licensing fees.

“There are many compassionate men and women who, with the proper training, will make wonderful home health aides. Many do not have the resources to afford the training. This class helps remove that barrier,” says FCS Director of Nursing Kathleen Vourlos. “Of the 17 students who enrolled in our first free CHHA class, all 17 passed the licensing exam at the conclusion of the training, making them eligible to apply for certification by the NJ Board of Nursing and pursue work in this in-demand field.”

Melissa Greiss says without the free CHHA training offered by FCS, she would not have been able to fulfill her goal of becoming a Home Health Aide for FCS. “As a mother of four children, the flexible hours were very appealing to me, but I didn’t have a job at the time and couldn’t afford the training,” Ms. Greiss says. “This is where I want to be, caring for people and giving them the chance to continue living in their own homes.”

FCS has been providing Home Care Services throughout Monmouth County since 1958 as part of its Mission to provide compassionate care to people during challenging times.  The agency currently employs 55 CHHAs who care for 140 seniors and individuals with mental, developmental All applicants for FCS’s free CHHA training must have a high school diploma or the equivalent. In addition, applicants must complete an in-person interview, consent to a criminal background check and pass an English proficiency exam prior to acceptance into the program. They must also have proof of a valid driver’s license, car insurance, reliable transportation and a willingness to travel throughout Monmouth County. Students who successfully complete the required 76-hour training program and competency evaluation will be eligible for and receive a Promise of Employment by FCS.

Individuals interested in applying to become a CHHA should contact FCS at 732-222-9111, extension 125.  Space is limited.  Applications are being taken now and will be accepted through May 5th.  Immediate openings are also available for Aides who are already certified.
