RED BANK, NJ - Beginning January 6, 2011, the Artists’ Workshop at the Red Bank Public Library will welcome Joe Bergholm as Artist-in-Residence. Artists seeking inspiration, motivation, and time to devote to their work are invited to attend the Artists’ Workshop on the first Thursday of each month from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the library. Joe will be working with the artists as a group and individually, offering suggestions for subjects as well as guidance with principles of art such as color, composition, and the selection and use of materials.
Joe Bergholm, a Red Bank Resident, is a gallery represented and award winning artist. His work is held in private, municipal, and corporate collections. He has always been involved with art, having grown up in a family of artists. He also earned a Ph.D. in engineering and had a distinguished technical career with Bell Laboratories and AT&T.
Since retiring, Joe Bergholm has returned to art full time. He is president of the Plein Air Painters of the Jersey Coast (www.thepapjc.com) and teaches the use of Golden OPEN Acrylics for Plein Air and studio painting. Joe is a registered teacher with the School of Color (SoC), U.S.A. The monthly Artists’ Workshops are free and no registration is required. Participants should bring their own drawing and painting materials, although oils are not permitted because of ventilation concerns. The program is supported by a generous contribution from the Friends of the Red Bank Public Library.
Free English as a Second Language classes for adults 18 and over are offered regularly at the Red Bank Public Library in partnership with the Literacy Volunteers of Monmouth County. The next series of ten weekly classes will begin Thursday, January 6, 2011, at 7:00 p.m. Students may register in person at the first two classes on January 6 and 13. Douglas L. Haviland of Meridian Life Support Training will conduct a free Family and Friends CPR training class at the Red Bank Public Library on Monday, January 10, 2011, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. An emergency training professional, Doug will demonstrate the life saving CPR skills needed for helping infants, children, and adults. “Money and Your Family” is the focus of a free monthly forum on timely financial topics presented the first Wednesday of the month at the Red Bank Public Library from 7:00-8:30 p.m. by Robin Goldberg, a retired business executive and Red Bank resident. On January 5, 2011, Robin will discuss retirement strategies for women. Participants are invited to bring questions for discussion. Registration is suggested. An investment professional with thirty years of experience, Robin has an MBA from George Washington University with a concentration in finance and a BA from Georgetown University. “I grew up learning from my parents that giving back to the community was important, and I appreciate this volunteer opportunity to share my background in financial matters with others,” says Goldberg.
The Red Bank Public Library’s Acoustic Saturdays series continues its 2010-2011 season on January 29, 2011, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Eisner New Jersey Room with a performance by “Beannacht,” the duo of guitarist/singer-songwriter Thomas Johnston and his niece, vocalist and lyricist Deirdre Forrest. Beannacht take their name from the Gaelic word for “blessing,” and their sound is a combination of Irish and Celtic music, classic rock, folk, and blues, mixed with a lot of heart and soul. The library presents this series featuring acoustic musicians and singer-songwriters on the last Saturday of the month from September to November and January to May. The Acoustic Saturdays programs at the library are produced and hosted by guitarist Anton Daub, the emcee of the weekly acoustic open microphone on Wednesday nights at Espresso Joe’s coffeehouse in Keyport and a frequent performer at many of the area’s acoustic music venues. These free performances are supported by funds
from the New Jersey State Library.
