Armchair quarterbacks playing to help ill children
Middletown, NJ – What has 16 strong arms, 256 big hearts, 512 legs, and can’t walk for three days? Participants of the 2010 Turkey Bowl.
On Saturday, Nov. 27, Monmouth County’s largest touch football tournament – the Turkey Bowl – will take place from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at Thorne Middle School. Non-profit organization Play2Win facilitates the annual tournament and proceeds of the Turkey Bowl will once again benefit Red Bank-based charity Jason’s Dreams for Kids (JDFK).
Founded by Dennis McGinnis in 1992, JDFK is a 501(c)(3) devoted to granting wishes to children diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses and was named in memory of McGinnis’s nephew, Jason Douglas Creager, who passed away after losing his battle with cancer.
The Turkey Bowl has raised over $200,000 for JDFK in its decade of Thanksgiving weekend tournaments, becoming a local tradition and can’t-miss event for want-to-be athletes throughout New Jersey and the surrounding tri-state area.
“It’s the most fun you can have supporting those in need,” says Play2Win president Adam Kazalski of Little Silver. “Giving thanks, giving back, and playing football are great traditions on Thanksgiving weekend.”
The tournament takes place rain or shine and the general public is invited to watch all 16 teams play the seven-on-seven, two hand touch, bracketed football tournament and to enjoy station food and beverages courtesy of the ACFEF Chef & Child Foundation.
This year volunteers from additional local charities including the Community YMCA, Prevention First, Knights of Columbus, JDFK, Hope for Children, the Florence Forgotson Foundation, Inc., and Big Brothers Big Sisters as well as students from area schools Red Bank Catholic, Middletown high schools North and South, Manasquan High School, Wall Intermediate School, and Goetz Middle School in Jackson will be on hand to ensure the event’s success.
Play2Win is a 501(c)(3) organization committed to continued growth and success of the Turkey Bowl as well as its developing and facilitating additional athletic events throughout the year to benefit a variety of local children’s charities. Partnering with regional charities and sharing resources is part of Play2Win’s mission.
2010 team sponsors include Preferred Client Group, Eatontown Lions Club, Seastreak, Kennedy Law Firm, Jamison, Eaton and Wood, McLaughlin Financial Group, World Auto Group, CiBan, ICx- DAQ Electronics, William Cordivari -First Hallmark Mortgage, The Next Generation Foundation, McLoone’s Restaurants, and International Planning Alliance in addition to field sponsors Giordano, Halleran and Ciesla, Mountain Hill School, Frank and Jeanne Shanley, HMC Assoc., Hope for Children, and Builders’ General Supply Company.
Additionally, the Monmouth University Women’s Basketball program is donating tickets to an upcoming basketball game at the MAC for all Turkey Bowl players, sponsors and event volunteers.
Describing the feeling of fulfillment at past events, Kazalski encourages families, friends, and mere football fans to attend saying, “You’ve never seen anything like the nearly 300 grown men suiting up in their colored team shirts and taking to the field early in the morning to football stadium anthems.”
He adds, “In 10 years we’ve had rain, we’ve had snow, we’ve had wind, and we’ve had sun. But through it all, we’ve had dedication. It truly is something to see.”
