Atlantic Highlands, NJ - The Atlantic Highlands Community Events Committee joins together with the Atlantic Highlands Chamber of Commerce for the third annual Mayor’s Ball, September 25th at the Shore Casino, 1 Simon Lake Drive, Atlantic Highlands. This year’s theme is Casino Night, an evening of blackjack, roulette, craps and a gift auction.   Tickets are $70, which includes a buffet and open bar with cocktails beginning at 7pm. Black Tie optional.  Tickets can be purchased at Sherman Jewelers, Book Compound, Julia’s, J. Stine Agency & Mimi & Grampy’s Ice Cream Parlour.

We all know that in these difficult times, it is hard for communities to maintain services and the quality of life we so value. With this in mind, the Atlantic Highland’s Community Events Committee was created. The idea was conceived by Mayor Frederick Rast III and formed three years ago as a non–political organization to raise funds for community organizations that have worthwhile projects. In its first year, 2008, the committee contributed $15,000 to the Atlantic Highland’s Library. The Library located in the basement of Borough Hall was plagued by mold. In order to remediate the mold problem the Library had to relocate during the renovation of Borough Hall.  The funds raised for the Library were used to update the equipment and furnishings.

In 2009, the recipient was the Atlantic Highland’s First Aid Squad, an all-volunteer organization, which provides around-the-clock, free, emergency medical and rescue services for the residents of Atlantic Highlands. The Committee donated $17,000 to the AHFAS. This very important organization has been named the “Outstanding Volunteer EMS Agency of the Year” by the New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services, Office of Emergency Medical Services. The First Aid Squad used the funds to update water rescue gear, make repairs to their rescue boat, upgrade safety equipment for all the ambulances, and purchase much-needed medical supplies.

This year’s recipient will be a project sponsored by the Atlantic Highland’s Chamber of Commerce to draw attention to the “heart” of Atlantic Highlands.  As we all know, “downtowns” are suffering economically and we hope that, with the Chamber’s help, we can jumpstart an economic revitalization that will help us all. Getting people to “go downtown” will increase participation in town events, such as the Fireman’s Fair and Fireworks display, FilmOneFest, Car Show, Arts & Crafts Festival, Farmers’ Market and other cultural events.

Funds have also been given to an Eagle Scout Project that created an exercise station at the new Bayshore Trail, and other donations were made to the Police, Fire Department, the PTO, a local blood drive and other special events.

In addition to providing funding, the Committee volunteers time to other organization’s events such as an annual Holiday Tree Sale. Santa sits atop an old-fashioned sled greeting the children as volunteers sell and trim the trees giving the community a “holiday air”.
