HIGHLANDS, NJ - The Highlands Fire Department and Highlands First Aid Squad will be sponsoring a blood drive and donor screening for local resident and community volunteer, Ramon Vargas.
Drive and Donor Screenings will take place on Saturday, May 1 from 10am-2pm at the Highlands Fire Department – 17-1 Shore Drive, Highlands NJ 07732.
Ray is 21 years old and suffering from Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDA). He is in need of a bone Marrow Transplant. Ray is Graduate of Henry Hudson Regional, Class of 2007, an active member of the Highlands First Aid Squad, Currently the squads 1st Lieutenant, he has completed Eight years in the US Naval Sea Cadet Corp NWS Earle Division, Ray is currently a member of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary, completed US Coast Guard Boot Camp – February 2008, in addition to all this he is a member of the Highlands Fire Department. Ray is employed as an EMT for the City of Long Branch, NJ
Councilwoman Rebecca Kane said “Ray has spent so much of his young life helping others and giving back to the community, now he needs the help of our community, to find him a match.” “There is no doubt in my mind, that when Highlands comes together we can accomplish anything”
This event will be run through the Central Jersey Blood Center and the HLA Registry Foundation Inc

Most healthy people who are seventeen years of age or older and weigh at least 120 pounds may be eligible to donate blood. Tattoos, body piercings and most medications are acceptable.
