ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ – The third annual lunch and movie fundraiser benefitting the Ladies Auxiliary of the local volunteer Fire Department will feature “A League of Their Own” on Sunday, April 28 at noon at the First Avenue Theater.

The 1992 hit movie directed by Penny Marshall and starring Tom Hanks, Geena Davis and Lori Petty, gives a fictionalized account of the true-life story of the start of the women’s professional baseball league when military call ups during World War II threatened the Professional Baseball League. Also featured in the film are Madonna and Rosie O’Donnell.

“We chose this film because it is baseball season and know the public will enjoy the comedy-drama that gave us such great quotes as “there’s no crying in baseball!” said Mickey Rast, president of the Auxiliary and chairman of the popular annual event.

The lunch and movie afternoon includes a full luncheon “with a few little surprises,” according to Rast, along with the movie. Tickets are $30 per person and can be purchased at the theater and at Salon @68, 68 First Avenue.

The annual fundraiser is also thanks in part to th4e generosity of theater owners former Mayor Fred and Mickey Rast who open the First Avenue facility each year for the benefit. The first year “Gone with the Wind was the featured attraction on the 75th anniversary of the film, and last year “Some Like it Hot” was selected as a special dedication to fire fighters.   “Each year has been more successful than the previous and we’re hoping that continues this year as well,” the chairman said.

“We couldn’t offer this special event without the cooperation and hard work of the entire auxiliary,” Rast said, in praising her committee.

The Ladies Auxiliary to the department attends firers at the call of the chief in order to provide cold drinks, hot drinks, sandwiches or other refreshments for the volunteers fighting fires or any emergencies to which they’re summoned. The Auxiliary also work the ticket booths, grand raffle, food court, games of chance, and other activities during the annual Firemen’s Fair at the Yacht Harbor every July. They also conduct other fundraisers throughout the year, using the funds to offset purchases of equipment  without additional municipal taxation. A portion of last year’s proceeds, together with funding this this event, will go towards the purchase of three defibrillators for the department. The new equipment will be placed in the fire house, on the fire boat, and in one of the fire trucks/
