HIGHLANDS, NJ - The following is a report from the Borough of Highlands Police Department concerning a recent arson investigation. All persons and suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
On 02/01/2019 at 12:52 am, units were dispatched to Shadow Lawn Trailer Park for a report of a mobile home fire. While responding to the emergency, Sgt. Ian Dobens observed Anthony Rodin, age 36 of Highlands, in the area of the fire scene. Sgt. Dobens recognized Rodin from prior encounters as a person with a history of violent activity in the area and detained him as the fire was being investigated.
The exterior door of a mobile home was lit on fire as two individuals slept inside the home. The fire fully engulfed the exterior door and began to make entry into the home before it was extinguished by the resident using a fire extinguisher. It was later found that there was also an attempt to burn a laundry facility in Shadow Lawn Trailer Park that connected to residential housing.
An investigation of the incident was conducted by Det. George Ruth of the Highlands Police Department in conjunction with the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s and Fire Marshal’s offices.
As the result of an in depth investigation Anthony Rodin was charged with three counts of aggravated arson, one count of criminal mischief and one count of possession of hollow point ammunition. Anthony Rodin is currently being held in the Monmouth County Correctional Facility.
It is a direct result of the quick thinking of Sgt. Ian Dobens as well as the diligent investigation conducted by Det. George Ruth and the assisting agencies that closure was provided to the victims of this traumatic incident.
