MIDDLETOWN, NJ – The Middletown Twp. Police arrested John R. Benda, 35, of Middletown, on the evening of Monday, December 3, 2018. Benda was charged with multiple drug and weapon charges. The arrest follows several months of investigation that began while detectives were investigating a series of burglaries in the Oak Hill section of Middletown. That investigation resulted in the arrest of Paul Procopio, 31, of Tinton Falls. Benda was not involved with the burglaries. However, the ongoing police investigation of the burglaries resulted in the identification of Benda for selling illegal drugs in the area.
Detective Keith Hirschbein arrested Benda and charged him with five counts of drug possession for possessing heroin, cocaine, Xanax, oxycontin, and amphetamines. Benda was also charged with possession with the intent to distribute heroin and possession with the intent to distribute Xanax, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The weapon charges included unlawful possession of a weapon, a switchblade knife, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes, and possession of a weapon during the commission of a drug-related crime.
As a result of the charges filed against Benda, he was lodged in the Monmouth County Correctional Institution pending a hearing.
