sandy hook park signSANDY HOOK, NJ - Gateway National Recreation Area and the NJ Forest Fire Service are co-hosting a Wildland Urban Interface Interagency Drill on November 4th, 2017 between 7 AM and 1 PM in and around the Ft. Hancock Section of Sandy Hook.  What is the wildland urban interface (or WUI, pronounced woo-ee)?  It is the area where structures or other human development meet or intermingle with undeveloped wildland or vegetative fuel.

NPS and NJ Forest Fire Service staff will train and drill with multiple municipal fire departments and agencies, that make up the task forces that would respond to a large wildland fire.  This drill is intended to improve collaboration among all participants, especially the surrounding fire departments which provide mutual aid to Sandy Hook.

Visitors should not be alarmed by the large presence of emergency vehicles expected to be at this drill, including about 150 personnel and various types of fire apparatus.  Visitors should expect short term closures of roads or trails in the area as the drill progresses.
