Middletown, NJ – On September 19, 2017 at approximately 8:00am, Middletown Twp. Police Officers responded to the area of Broadway and Main Street in the Port Monmouth section of Middletown Twp. for a report of a vehicle that had become submerged in tidal flood waters. Cpl. Robert McNair, Cpl. Ryan Riffert, and Ptl. Thomas Hughes arrived on scene and observed the motorist who had exited the vehicle and was sitting on the roof. Investigation showed that the driver had attempted to drive though the high water when the vehicle left the roadway and became stuck in a ditch.
The driver, who is not being identified, did not sustain any injuries. The motorist waded through the flood water and was subsequently transported from the scene by police. The motorist has made arrangements to have the vehicle removed. There have been additional reports of vehicles stranded in the water, but it has been determined that the reports are based upon the original call. Drivers are urged to never attempt to drive through high waters due to the dangers posed to persons and property.
