ASBURY PARK, NJ–– Big Brothers Big Sisters of Monmouth & Middlesex Counties (BBBSMMC) recently partnered with local businesses and organizations to put on two Back to School Parties that provided children with school supplies and necessities for the upcoming year. Backpacks filled with donated items were distributed at two parties, one hosted by the Monmouth Mall in Eatontown on August 23 and the second at the Heldrich Hotel in New Brunswick on August 24.
Over 100 children in the BBBSMMC program as well as other local school children received a backpack filled with school supplies generously donated by individuals and businesses. Bigs, Littles and children waiting to be matched danced the night away with Zeybrah, who taught the group African songs and dances. Participants enjoyed pizza and dessert, received a book from Barnes & Noble and then selected their favorite backpack to take home. These annual school supply drives benefit families in need and provide children with the necessary tools to feel confident for the upcoming school year.
“Our mentoring programs help instill the importance of education in our Little Brothers and Little Sisters and the Back to School Parties get our Littles excited for the upcoming school year. Thanks to support from the community, each year it is possible for hundreds of local children to have the supplies they need to begin school on the right foot” stated William Salcedo, Executive Director of BBBSMMC.
BBBSMMC would like to thank the Monmouth Mall and The Heldrich for each hosting a party and donating gift cards for the Littles to purchase needed items for school. A special thank you to the community for their ongoing support and to the following businesses and organizations for their donations of supplies and party refreshments: Illiano’s Pizza, Dean’s Natural Foods, Buffalo Wild Wings, AT&T Pioneers, Church of the Nativity, UBS Financial Services – Red Bank, Barnes & Noble, TDK-Lambda Americas, Inc., Starbucks, Sun Cycle and Surf Taco.
BBBSMMC’s mission is to provide children facing adversity with strong and enduring, professionally supported 1-to-1 relationships that change their lives for the better, forever. Currently there are over 700 children ages 6-18 building relationships with their Bigs that will help them develop personally, socially and academically. The program is solely run on the support from the community through individual gifts, grants and special events.
