ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ - Members and friends of the First Presbyterian Church of Atlantic Highlands are invited to hear the Rev. Paul Rack mark the Fourth Sunday of Advent this weekend as Christmas rapidly approaches.
The pastor's sermon, entitled "Jesus: The Lord Saves," is based on the message offered in Matthew 1:18-25. His message will be presented during the 11 a.m. Sunday service at the 126-year-old church at Third & E Highland Aves. Elder Judy Curry-Phipps will serve as the liturgist.
The church will also conduct a Nativity Eve Candlelight the service at 8 p.m. Saturday, Dec.24 and a Christmas Day service at 11 a.m. Sunday when Rack's message will be entitled "Four Titles."
The David Nunez-directed adult choir will perform during each service.
Among the hymn on tap for Sunday are "Sleepers, Wake! A Voice Astounds Us," "It Came Upon a Midnight Clear," "Soon and Very Soon," "O Hear Our Cry, O Lord," "Christmas Is Coming" and O Little Town of Bethlehem."
"Jesus' conception is 'by the Holy Spirit,' according to Rack. "This is a big stumbling block for modern people, it seems.
That's because we take it as gynecological statement.
"But the point of Jesus' conception is that it was not up to a man but to the eternal creative breath of God."
In addition to this Sunday's worship service, all area residents are invited to attend the church's New Year Day hymn- sing on Jan. 1.
