Middletown, NJ - A 16-year-old girl was flown by helicopter to a hospital after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 36 Tuesday night.
According to George Quackenbush, who identified himself as the girl's uncle, the teenager was walking home from work when she was struck crossing Highway Route 36 at Avenue D. The girl's shoes were found some 15 feet away from where the she landed after being hit.
The girl was crossing from the southbound side to the northbound side of the highway around 8:25 p.m. when she was hit by a 4-door compact car, according to published reports.
According to Middletown Police Deputy Chief Steve Dollinger the girl was hit by a four-door compact car occupied by three women. Dollinger said the driver was a young woman wearing a large sun hat.
The car did not stop. Police are investigating.
The girl was flown by helicopter to Jersey Shore Medical Center.
