ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS -- The 125-year-old First Presbyterian Church will celebrate Trinity Sunday this weekend with the confirmation of four new young members of its church family.
During the 11 a.m. service, the Rev. Paul F. Rack will preach on "Secret Jesus" in a message based on John 7:1-13.
Rack will also administer Holy Communion.
"Jesus meets cynical resistance even from his own family," Rack said in describing the theme of his message. "He resorts to misleading them and acting in secret. What is the place of secrecy in spiritual life?"
The David Nunez-directed adult choir will perform during the service.
Sunday School will begin right after the children’s sermon and all area children are invited to attend.
The church is also continuing its shorter, informal weekend service entitled a "Gathering in God's Love" at 7 p.m. on Sunday evenings.
Area residents are also invited to attend the weekly Bible Study, called "Bible by the Bay," which is held at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays at Sissy's Restaurant in the harbor.
Starting June 7, the 11 a.m. Sunday service will be held in air-conditioned Fellowship Hall at the rear of the church rather than in the sanctuary. Services will be held at the harbor Gazebo, rather than at the church, at 11 a.m. on the fourth Sunday of each summer month starting June 28th.
In marking its 125th anniversary, the First Presbyterian Church is dedicating itself to the support of the local food pantry. Members and friends are urged to donate canned goods and coins onregular basis. The emphasis for donations for this month is "May Flours," which includes baking items or treats like flour, sugar, vegetable oil, non-stick baking spray, brownies, cake mixes and boxes of store-bought, ready-to-eat cookies or snacks.
The food pantry is operated by the Association of Area Community Churches (AACC). Presbyterian Church donors are asked to drop off canned goods and other non-perishable items in the entrance Narthex at the church, located at Third and E. Highland Aves.
The church is also taking part in the AACC-sponsored Community Vacation Bible School which will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Atlantic Highlands Elementary School. To sign up or volunteer, contact the director at 732 320-8170 or by e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
