Timber, a certified therapy dog, visits the library to sit with and listen to hesitant readers and dog lovers too. Children age 5 and older can register for a free 15 minute Timber Time session. Teen programming continues in 2014 with regular and special events. The Young Adult Anime Club for teens and pre-teens in grades 6 through 12 will meet on Saturday, February 1, 2014, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. We will be watching some Anime, and there is always popcorn! Students who would like some practice before taking the SAT or who want to know whether to take the SAT or the ACT will have an opportunity to take a Free SAT/ACT Combo Practice Test at the Red Bank Public Library on February 22, 2014, from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. The exam will be administered by a Kaplan Test Prep proctor and is offered by the library’s Young Adult Department. A special African American History Month program will take place on Thursday, February 20, from 7:30 to 9:00 p.m. in the Adult Department of the Red Bank Public Library. The al wright unit jazz trio will perform a concert celebrating African American music and musicians with prose, song, and instrumentals featuring Al Wright on drums and vocalist Ruth Wright. Ruth will read “Jazz: The African American’s Contribution to the Arts,” a brief history of jazz written by Al Wright. She will also sing classics such as “Come Sunday” by Duke Ellington, “Strange Fruit” by Lewis Allan, and “Work Song” by Oscar Brown, Jr., and Nat Adderley. Throughout the program there will be instrumentals on drum and keyboard of compositions by great African American jazz artists. This program is free and no registration is required.
Learn how to Outsmart Your Smartphone Saturday, February 1, from 2:00 to 3:30 p.m. with librarian Erik Stevenson at the Red Bank Public Library. Smartphones are everywhere, but using them can be daunting since they are much more than just a phone. Join the next meeting of the Artists’ Workshop for adults at the Red Bank Public Library on Thursday, February 6, 2014, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. There will be an additional class on Thursday, February 27, 2014, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. to make up the class missed on January 2 because of weather. The Artists’ Workshop is designed for Artists seeking inspiration, motivation, and time to devote to their work are invited to attend the Artists’ Workshop for the regular meetings on the first Thursday of each month. Red Bank artist Joe Bergholm is our Artist-in-Residence and works with the artists as a group and individually, offering suggestions for subjects as well as guidance in principles of art such as color, composition, and the selection and use of materials. The Artists’ Workshop is free and no registration is required. Participants should bring their own drawing and painting materials, although oils are not permitted because of ventilation concerns.

The Red Bank Senior Center in cooperation with the Red Bank Public Library hosts a book discussion group on the last Monday of each month at the Senior Center at 1:00 p.m. except in December.
