MIDDLETOWN, NJ - At 10:09 PM on Tuesday October 29th, 2013, the Middletown Township Fire Department was dispatched to a “report a fire in the garage at 298 Harmony Road”. Approximately 35 firefighters from 3 companies of the Middletown Township Fire Department (East Keansburg, Port Monmouth, and Old Village Fire Companies), under the command of Department Chief John D’Altilio, responded to the scene. At the time multiple fire units were returning from and earlier call in the area and were on the scene in less than two minutes after being alerted. Third Assistant Fire Chief Tony Citarella was the first to arrive and quickly assessed the situation. Seeing that the blaze in the garage was starting to extend into the attached 2 story residential structure, Chief Citarella directed the first hose team to attack the fire from the home’s second floor attic space. Additional hose teams were deployed to extinguish the fire from the garage level. According to Chief Citarella, the extremely fast response and the highly coordinated attack by the responding firefighters held the inferno in check and contained the majority of the damage to the garage portion of the structure.
The fire was declared under control within 15 minutes and the last fire department units left the scene by 11:30 PM.
The occupied structure sustained water and smoke damage.
Also assisting at the scene were the MTFD Air Unit and the Middletown First Aid Squad.
There were no reported injuries during the incident.
The fire is being investigated by the Middletown Township Fire Prevention office.
