ATLANTIC HIGHLANDS, NJ - The borough has honored the memory of Eileen F. Colelli, a Shade Tree Commission member, with the planting of a tree at the Center Avenue soccer field.
Colelli, 39-year borough resident who died on Sept. 24, 2012, was an advertising representative at the Asbury Park Press, a Mary K Cosmetics sales director and a Democratic district committeewoman.
The April 19 tree-planting ceremony, presided over by Commission Chairman Louise I. Donoghue, drew over 50 residents, friends and family to witness the planting of a Northern Red Oak. Among those speaking during the ceremony were retired Borough Librarian Marilyn Scherfen, long-time friend and neighbor of Colelli; friend Ellie Palette and former Press colleague Don Phillips.
The planning coincided with what would have been Mrs. Colelli's 65th birthday.
A reception was held after the ceremony at the West Side Firemen's Field House.
The planting, timed to coincide with Arbor Day celebrations, is part of a commission program to honor local residents, past or present, for their efforts on behalf of the community.
The commission also conducts an annual poster contest for local students and distributes seedlings to schoolchildren.
