RED BANK, NJ - Special February events at the Red Bank Public Library begin with the Fourth Annual Used Book Sale presented by the Friends of the Red Bank Public Library on Saturday, February 2, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. A $10.00 fee allows early admission at 9:00 a.m. A Bag Sale, at which shoppers can fill bags provided at the sale for $5.00 a bag, will take place on Monday, February 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A “Blizzard Date” is set for one week later, February 8, 9, and 11, 2013.
To kick off the sale the Friends will hold a gala Preview Party at the library on Friday, February 1, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. with wine and cheese, live music, auction items, and first choice of the books. Admission for the Friday evening Preview Party will be free for members of the Friends of the Library and $20.00 for non-members. Memberships will be available at the door.
“You will find a huge selection of books including current best sellers, classics, fiction, and non-fiction, as well as DVDs, CDs, and a separate room for the Children’s Book Sale,” promises Beth Hanratty, President of the Friends. All proceeds will benefit the Friends of the Red Bank Public Library.
A lecture on “The History of the Monmouth Memorial Hospital” will be presented by Fred Pachman, Director of the Altschul Medical Library at Monmouth Medical Center, on Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. The program will cover the history of the hospital from its beginnings in four rooms over a delicatessen on Broadway in Long Branch to the current community-based academic medical center. Monroe Eisner, son of Sigmund and Bertha Eisner, and his involvement with Monmouth Medical Center will be featured in the lecture. This program is free and registration is not required. Memorabilia from Monmouth Memorial Hospital will be on display at the library during February in the library’s second floor exhibit area.
Also featured in the exhibit area throughout 2013 will be items from the collections of Glenn Vogel, long time collector of anything “Red Bank.” Glenn will rotate his collections of photographs, postcards, bottles, jugs, jars, and all manner of ephemera and memorabilia related to the history of Red Bank so that every month something new and different will be on display to challenge the recollections of even the most knowledgeable Red Banker.

Have fun making special Valentine’s Day Crafts on Saturday, February 9, 2013, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Children ages 5 and up will decorate cards with rubber stamps, make lollipop flowers, and craft pretty heart-shaped suncatchers.
Artsy Smartsy will take place on Saturday, February 16, 2013, from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m. Children 5 and older will learn about the impressionist painter Claude Monet and create their own masterpieces in his style.
Join the Rockin’ Readers Tween Book Club on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. for children ages 9 to 12. Call the library to find out the title of the book we will talk about in February.
Yoga Kids for children 5 and older takes place Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. Alice Balzarini, who specializes in yoga for children, conducts this class. Children should bring their own yoga mats.
Timber, a certified therapy dog, visits the library twice a month to sit with and listen to hesitant readers and dog lovers too. Children age 5 and over can register for a free 15 minute Timber Time session on the first and third Wednesday of each month between 4:00 and 5:00 p.m. Timber is a beautiful, patient, loving, and gentle listener. The Young Adult Anime Club for teens and pre-teens in grades 6 through 12 meets at the Red Bank Public Library on the first Saturday of every month from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Join others who share your love for anime, watch a few episodes of a show together, and enjoy some snacks too. The Young Adult Book Club for teens and preteens in grades 6 through 12 meets at the Red Bank Public Library on the first Monday of each month from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. The group will read Seraphina by Rachel Hartman on February 4, 2013. Adult programming in February starts with the next meeting of the Artists’ Workshop at the Red Bank Public Library on Thursday, February 7, 2013, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. Artists seeking inspiration, motivation, and time to devote to their work are invited to attend the “Artists’ Workshop” on the first Thursday of each month. Red Bank artist Joe Bergholm is our Artist-in-Residence and works with the artists as a group and individually, offering suggestions for subjects as well as guidance in principles of art such as color, composition, and the selection and use of materials. The “Artists’ Workshop” is free and no registration is required. Participants should bring their own drawing and painting materials, although oils are not permitted because of ventilation concerns.
Friends Scrabble will be held on Saturday, February 9, 2013, from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. This program is sponsored by the Friends of the Red Bank Public Library. Registration is not required.
The River Read Poetry Reading Series will hold its regular monthly meeting at the Red Bank Public Library on Saturday, February 9, 2013, from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Poets Gail Fishman Gerwin and Donna Baier-Stein will be the featured readers. An open mic will follow. The public is invited to this free program and no registration is required.
Colleen Smith, MA, MSW, LSW, of the Monmouth County Office on Aging, leads regularly scheduled Caregiver’s Support Groups at the Red Bank Public Library. The meeting date in February will be Tuesday, February 19, 2013, from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. These free programs are available to anyone who is a caregiver for a person over the age of 60. Caregivers are invited to come and relax while finding resources and information with a supportive group of peers. The Red Bank Public Library’s Acoustic Saturday music series continues its Winter-Spring season on February 23, 2013, from 2:00-4:00 p.m. The library presents this free monthly series, hosted by Anton Daub featuring the best singers, songwriters, and acoustic musicians on the Jersey Shore and beyond. The Red Bank Public Library offers the free weekly one-hour Yoga for Adults on Fridays from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Amy Novak, a graduate of the Institute for Therapeutic Massage and experienced yoga instructor, teaches the class, which is appropriate to all levels of yoga experience.
Please bring your own yoga mat. At this time, registration is not required for this popular class, and participants will be able to attend on a first come, first served basis up to a total of twenty people.
Free one-on-one Resume Help is offered at the Red Bank Public Library on selected Saturdays between 1:00 and 4:00 p.m. Our librarian volunteer provides assistance writing a new resume or updating an old one and explains the online career resources available through the New Jersey State Library. The Red Bank Senior Center in cooperation with the Red Bank Public Library hosts a book discussion group on the last Monday of each month at the Senior Center at 1:00 p.m. except in December.
